Assessment and Performance Anxiety / Imposter Syndrome in Music Teachers
Vocal and Instrumental Music education can bring immense joy and fulfilment, but it can also present significant emotional and psychological challenges for both students and teachers. This workshop explores purposeful approaches to wellbeing and performance support, focusing on the impact of assessment and performance anxiety in students, alongside the often-overlooked experience of imposter syndrome among music teachers.
Participants will examine the causes and effects of performance-related stress, considering how pressure, perfectionism, comparison, self-confidence, and assessment expectations can influence musical experiences and learning outcomes. The session will also explore imposter syndrome within music teaching, reflecting on how self-doubt, professional isolation, unrealistic expectations, and fear of judgement can affect confidence, wellbeing, and professional identity.
Through discussion, reflection, and practical examples, the workshop will provide strategies for creating supportive learning and teaching environments that promote confidence, resilience, self-awareness, and healthy musical development. Participants will gain practical tools to help students manage performance and assessment pressures more positively, while also reflecting on ways to support their own wellbeing, professional growth, and sense of belonging within the music education community.
