Performance Pedagogy: Techniques to Embody and Communicate Music in Public Performance Settings
Performance is more than technical accuracy, it is the art of communicating meaning, emotion, character, and musical intention to an audience. This workshop explores purposeful approaches to performance pedagogy, examining how teachers can support students in developing not only technical confidence, but also stage presence, expressive communication, and embodied musical understanding in public performance settings.
Teachers will explore the relationship between physical awareness, posture, movement, breathing, gesture, expression, and musical communication, considering how performers can develop a stronger connection between technical execution and artistic interpretation.
Alongside discussion and reflection, the workshop will provide practical strategies and pedagogical approaches to help students communicate music more authentically and confidently in performance contexts. Participants will gain ideas for supporting performers across a range of ages, genres, and levels, helping students move beyond simply “playing the notes” towards more expressive, connected, and meaningful musical performances.
