Purposeful Musicianship Development
Teaching Musicianship with Purpose: Developing Aural Skills and Sight-Reading
Date and Time TBC
Strong musicianship forms the foundation of confident and independent musical learning. This workshop explores practical and purposeful approaches to developing aural skills and sight-reading within vocal and instrumental teaching, helping educators integrate musicianship naturally and effectively into lessons rather than treating it as a separate or isolated skill.
Teachers will explore the role of active listening, inner hearing, rhythm recognition, pitch awareness, musical memory, pulse, notation literacy, and stylistic understanding in supporting broader musical development. The session will examine common challenges students experience with aural work and sight-reading, while considering strategies to build confidence, fluency, and long-term musical understanding in engaging and accessible ways.
Alongside discussion and reflection, the workshop will provide a range of practical teaching strategies, exercises, and resources designed to support musicianship development across different ages, levels, and learning contexts. Participants will gain ideas for embedding aural training and sight-reading into regular teaching practice in meaningful, creative, and motivating ways, helping students become more responsive, independent, and musically aware learners.
