Teaching with Purpose in the Early Years: Foundations for Lifelong Musical Learning
The early years play a vital role in shaping children’s musical confidence, creativity, communication, and overall relationship with music. After a short exposé of some of the research on adults who dropped out of formal music learning as children, yet reconnected with instrumental learning as adults, this workshop explores purposeful approaches to early years music vocal and instrumental music education.
Teachers will examine the key principles underpinning effective early years music teaching, including play-based learning, active participation, creativity, movement, singing, listening, rhythm, and exploration through sound. The session will consider how carefully planned musical experiences can nurture curiosity, imagination, self-expression, and foundational musicianship skills in developmentally appropriate and engaging ways.
Alongside discussion and reflection, the workshop will provide practical teaching strategies, activities, and resources suitable for a variety of early years settings, including group classes, schools, community programmes, and private teaching contexts.
