Society for Music Education in Ireland

SMEI was established to advance and support music education throughout the island of Ireland.

Our Aims

SMEI seeks to promote and foster research and practice in music education in all its forms by organising annual conferences and seminars, generating publications, and maintaining this website.

Membership of SMEI is open to all individuals involved in or interested in promoting the practice and research of music education in all its forms. Within the society we undertake:

  • To raise the profile and status of music education in Ireland on a national and international level;

  • To advocate for and support music education activities on a national level;

  • To represent Irish music educators as a member of the Council for Professional Organisations of the International Society for Music Education (ISME);

  • To provide a forum for all involved in music education in Ireland to meet and share views, observations and information in a spirit of co-operation and collaboration;

  • To encourage respect for the diversity, integrity and historical contexts of different music education organisations and institutions, while at the same time developing new procedures and activities within SMEI;

  • To establish national music education events at regular intervals, e.g., annually
    or biennially, including seminars, conferences and showcase events;

  • To encourage professional development initiatives in music education; however SMEI will not assume a political role in the context of industrial relations.
