The University of Birmingham, Department of Music, invites applications for the following post: Lectureship in Music (Ethnomusicology and/ or Popular Music)

Job summary: Teaching and Research in the Department of Music range in period from the Middle Ages to the present day, and are focused on, but not restricted to, the Western classical tradition. Undergraduate music study at the University of Birmingham is characterised by a longstanding tradition of excellence, an active culture of music-making, and the access students have to the vibrant musical life of the UK’s second city. The department’s research was ranked joint second in the country in the last RAE exercise, a level of excellence it is keen to maintain and enhance. An important recent development is the completion of the purpose-built Bramall Music Building with its acoustically-designed 450-seat concert hall and early and electroacoustic music suites, giving Birmingham arguably the finest university music facilities in the country.

The appointee will be expected to be a specialist in popular music and/ or ethnomusicology. Skills in performance and a commitment to outreach into the larger community are also desirable.
